Westermo is set to revolutionize remote substation connectivity for a prominent European electricity operator as part of a visionary endeavor to integrate renewable energy into the grid and usher in a decarbonized electricity network.
A far-reaching, strategic long-term framework agreement has been inked, positioning Westermo to supply its robust Merlin range of cellular routers, proffer comprehensive implementation and commissioning support, and leverage its Activator automated provisioning software to configure the novel data networks in the pipeline. With an initial order valued at approximately 28 million Swedish krona (2.35 million euro), signifying just a fraction of the potential Merlin router volume covered by the framework agreement.
The electricity operator's aspiration is to have an initial fleet of ten thousand monitoring devices fully operational, actively collecting real-time data from remote substations within the span of three years. This wealth of data will bolster intelligent grid applications, including distribution automation, actively bolstering the evolution towards a low-carbon electricity system.
Westermo's Merlin series routers have been tailor-made for the intricacies of networking in such applications, as they meticulously adhere to the IEC 61850-3 standard for medium voltage substations. This means they boast the highest echelons of galvanic isolation and security. In addition, these routers are equipped with a suite of tools for remote provisioning, management, and control. This confluence of features translates to simpler, more streamlined networks that can be readily optimized and upgraded, presenting a winning formula for cost reduction and carbon emission mitigation.

He emphasized that the secure cellular routers, with their multifunctional attributes like mini-RTUs, industrial protocol gateways, and converters, together with the innovative mass configuration capabilities and deployment software 'Activator', typify the solutions sought after by the industry, and underscores Westermo's growing influence in the energy sector.
